Idelic hosted the webinar, “Employing Effective Driver Training & Engagement Strategies,” where our presenters discussed how fleets can train, engage, and onboard drivers, as well as measure their program’s effectiveness. Below, we’ve transcribed questions our audience asked of our presenters and answered a few we didn’t get to during the session.
What do I do if a driver seems like they’re getting a little bit disconnected? How do I start to bring them back into the culture of the fleet?”
Cody McClain, Director of Safety and Human Resources, Tucker Freight Lines:
It’s the human connection, right? You have to ask them: What’s wrong? Why are you disconnected? Is it something in the system that’s not working? Is it a personality conflict? Is it something in your personal life? Is it that you don’t feel well? Ask them why they are disconnected. That’s usually going to lead you where you need to go. That’s our guiding practice—that human connection.
How do you manage driver health as a prevention tool? As far as preventing driver turnover is concerned.
Dr. Gina Anderson, Co-Founder and CEO, Luma Brighter Learning:
Definitely identify what the health goals are and work with them on it, because you have to identify the goals and give them training to meet those goals. Asking them what they need, or where they’re lacking, and where you can help is important. It can be financial goals, it can be physical health. Luma has a whole library of health and wellness modules, but what’s really cool is you can customize it to fit your own health program and incentive drivers.
Cody McClain, Director of Safety and Human Resources, Tucker Freight Lines:
We have an industry that has an aging median age and finding those little strategies to help—for example, those little foot bikes, and we have drivers that step ups and downs on the truck. There’s always great little strategies that we can learn and provide.
How do you handle owner-operators who are not classified as employees, but can still have an adverse impact on the company’s safety record?
Cody McClain, Director of Safety and Human Resources, Tucker Freight Lines:
Our approach is kind of multifaceted. We try to proactively train them as soon as those drivers come in for onboarding. We show them how much we care and show them how it’s going to be successful for them, but also, when it comes to “refresher” training courses it’s really about showing them the “why” again. If we show them how it’s going to benefit them, that’s usually when I get the most buy-in.
Dr. Gina Anderson, Co-Founder and CEO, Luma Brighter Learning:
I would say with Luma, almost all of our clients are able to build a learning path that is unique to each driver. With a group tool, you can customize what different users see when they log in. That gives you the ability to create custom learning paths… You’re able to build those learning paths as needed.
