Background on CLI
CLI Transport, LP operates over 130 trucks, drives over 19 million miles annually, and delivers more than 1.7 billion gallons of petroleum products as the dedicated petroleum carrier for Sheetz Convenience Stores. CLI proudly services all Sheetz locations across six states (PA, MD, WV, VA, OH, & NC).
As a three-time ATA President’s Trophy winner, their mission is to provide safe, dependable, and efficient transportation service to Sheetz at a competitive cost.
CLI’s safety team faced challenges clearly identifying risk because their telematics data was not integrated. Dedicated petroleum drivers use Speedgauge to monitor speeding events and PeopleNet for other driving alerts, such as harsh braking. The food and bakery division uses Samsara separately. Each system generated different types of alerts with varying frequencies, making it nearly impossible to compare driver performance. Being unable to normalize their telematics alerts and have a single source of truth, CLI continued to see an increase in road incidents.
In addition, CLI’s driver training system lacked visibility into specific training data and critical success factors that were needed to effectively coach drivers. The safety team lacked the tools to effectively improve performance and measure outcomes.
A single source of truth to identify their riskiest drivers
CLI partnered with Idelic to normalize the telematics alerts from their three systems, allowing Idelic’s Safety Suite Platform to accurately display their most at-risk drivers across the fleet, regardless of which system was collecting the data. This provided the safety team with a clear list of the drivers who needed coaching so they could focus their time more efficiently.

52% reduction in accidents with a proactive data-driven coaching program
After normalizing their data to identify their riskiest drivers, CLI’s safety team implemented Idelic’s coaching plans, allowing them to apply industry-leading tactics to address driver risk before an accident occurs. They were able to customize these plans to meet the unique and separate needs of their petroleum and food and bakery divisions. Idelic also worked with CLI to pull in driver training data, which was previously unavailable to them. Combined, these capabilities helped the CLI team have a single system to manage drivers and train more effectively to reduce preventable accidents.

CLI’s efforts led to a 52% reduction in preventable accidents within one year of adopting the Safety Suite Platform and implementing Idelic’s coaching plans. Their success becomes even more evident when factoring they simultaneously increased the number of miles driven by 21% in that same year. Even with drivers on the road more frequently, accidents declined as a result of CLI’s newfound visibility into their driver performance and coaching data.
Obtaining a single, integrated view of fleet risk across their different driver divisions helped CLI pinpoint risk before an accident occurred, while Idelic’s coaching plans made their coaching as proactive and effective as possible, resulting in fewer accidents and reducing their Total Cost of Risk (TCoR).
