Earlier this week, Idelic hosted the webinar, “Employing Effective Training and Engagement Strategies,” where our presenters discussed how fleets can train, engage, and onboard drivers to prevent crashes and reduce turnover.
During the webinar, which you can watch a full recording of here, our presenters highlighted three things every fleet should understand about training and engaging drivers:
#1: The Average Learner Needs to Interact with a Topic 7-8 Times to Internalize It
According to Dr. Gina Anderson, Co-Founder and CEO of Luma, repeated exposure to a topic is crucial for ensuring drivers truly understand a concept taught in training. Fleets can apply this knowledge at their fleet by offering continuous coaching classes to their drivers, as repeated exposure to a topic can yield a huge benefit to knowledge retention.
#2: Positive Video Events are Highly Effective Training Tools
Tucker Freight Lines not only uses their “close call” video incidents as training tools, but also their videos of safe drivers acting admirably in a tough situation. It’s important that fleets show drivers examples of what they should do, not just what they shouldn’t do, and these videos are an effective way to do so.
#3: The Best Way a Fleet Can Support Their Drivers is to Ask Them What They Need
According to Cody McClain, Director of Safety and Human Resources at Tucker Freight Lines, the #1 step a fleet can take today to improve their driver engagement is to directly ask their driver what they need to succeed. However, McClain cautioned that fleets must take action on the feedback they receive, as failing to do so can give drivers the impression that their fleet didn’t actually listen to what they said.
How to Implement These Tips at Your Fleet
Implementing the advice above can seem difficult, but with the right tools, it doesn’t have to be.
The Idelic Safety Suite® is the most comprehensive driver management platform in the trucking industry and is the premier tool for coaching and retaining drivers. With Safety Suite, fleets can create the high-engagement PDPs they need to retain drivers and instill safety-first values into every member of their fleet. They can also instantly compile all of a driver’s data, fully understand their performance, and prepare for a meeting with that driver in minutes.
